Principal’s Message

It’s About Safety

At Springer, we are constantly talking to the kids about safety.  We remind them that our playground rules are based on safety.  We facilitate with them to help make their classroom culture a safe place to learn.  And, we lay down the expectation that everyone is to be respectful and supportive to each other- which further enhances the safe feel of campus.

Now I’m going to ask parents to think about what they can do to contribute to the safe environment at Springer.  The good news is: these are fairly easy things to do.

Campus Safety: We require all visitors on campus to sign in at the office before going anywhere on campus.  We also want visitors to wear a visitor sticker so that we know they have checked in at the office.  This is important, especially in case of an emergency as we need to account for everyone on campus.

Street and Parking Lot Safety: All drivers are required to follow the safety procedures and laws while driving their vehicles.  Remember, the speed limit on Rose Avenue is now 15 mph near school.  Also, remember that making a U-turn in the middle of a street is illegal.  Lastly, I am asking that you monitor your speed while driving in the parking lot. I’m seeing a lot of speeding vehicles in our parking lot lately!  Please SLOW down.

By adhering to these requests, Springer becomes an even safer place to learn and grow.

Have a safe weekend.

Wade Spenader- Principal

                                                   SMS Texting

Parents, you may subscribe to SMS messaging alerts at any time.  Springer and LASD have the ability to send emergency alerts to you- only when necessary.  But, you won’t get those alerts unless you subscribe.   All you need to do is provide Mrs. Ripley Smith with your cell phone number, or confirm that the correct number is already entered into our student information system.  Then send a text with the word “subscribe” to 68453.

Noon Duty Position Open

Do you want to get involved at Springer in a super fun and positive way?  Do you like to play?  If so, you might be interested in the noon duty position opening we have currently.   The position requires you to supervise, interact, and engage yourself with the students of Springer at lunchtime.  It’s only an hour a day (11:45am-12:45pm) and it is a paid position!  If you, or anyone you know, is interested please contact Principal Wade Spenader.    wspenader@lasdschools.org

Walk-a-thon Wrap-up!

It was a Walk on the Wild Side!

Thank you for coming out for the 28th annual Springer Walkathon.  We hope you had a fun, memorable day.  Sponsor cards will be sent home to students in their Friday folders so that pledge money can be collected.  All money must be turned in by November 3th to qualify for the class participation parties.  Remember, the class with the highest participation will have a party!

This fun event could not have happened without the help of the many Springer Volunteers.  Thank you for coming and supporting your kids and their school.

We would also like to thank Eric Fischer-Colbrie from Intero Real Estate Services for sponsoring the Taco Truck.

Lice Update

Male headlouse -dorsal.jpg

Head lice are an endemic in Santa Clara County, which means that they are always present in our community.  While head lice require a large amount of effort to treat, it’s important to remember that they do not cause disease or harm.   The LASD Health Services provides detection and treatment information on their website.  Click here to learn more.  The Center For Disease Control also has helpful information--here is the link to their site.

Tech Challenge

This year's TECH Challenge at the Tech Museum in San Jose is Taking Flight! Registration is open for students in grades 4-12.

If you are interested, here is the link. It is a team engineering design challenge to solve a real world problem. The big event takes place on Saturday, April 23rd. I'd love to see a few teams from Springer take on the challenge.  Any questions?  Contact Joanie Craddock at jcraddock@lasdschools.org.

LAEF

Save Us A Call! LAEF’s Phonathon is next week.

Have you made your annual donation to LAEF? We would love to take you off our call list, so please go online today at LAEFonline.net and make your tax-deductible donation before October 15th.  If you’re a first-time donor or if you choose to increase your gift to LAEF this year, it will be doubled by the LAEF Board, up to a total of $100,000!

Are you an LAEF supporter? Join the fun and help us meet our $3.5M goal by signing up for our phonathon on Monday 10/19 or Wednesday 10/21. It’s a wonderful opportunity to thank parents for all they do for our kids, to build community spirit and to educate our new families about the enrichment programs we fund. There are many ways to help, both on the phone and behind the scenes. Sign up at LAEFonline.org.

District English Advisory Committee (DELAC) Meeting

The following topics are on the agenda: Public Comment, Introduction to the EL Standards, Criteria for Reclassifying students, Election, and Meeting Dates. OhmConnect Earns $$ For Springer!

The Springer community started using a novel fundraising platform last year, called OhmConnect. We raised $930 by having a handful of Springer parents turn down their electricity usage just one hour per week.

We're aiming to raise $5,000 this year and all you need to do is signup using this link and connect your utility account.

ohmc.co/bcrane09

OhmConnect donates between $50 - $150 per team member per year, depending on how much you reduce. As part of a "Back to School" competition running through 9/24, they'll be donating an instant $30 per new team member. If you haven't signed up yet, now's the time to do it!

Please contact Ann Haigh at 650-947-1180 or at ahaigh@lasdschools.org or complete this form if you are interested.
